History of the domain

The first castle was built in 1565 by the bishop François de Foix-Candale. His niece inherited it and married Jean Louis de Nogaret de la Valette, first duc of Épernon, grand admiral of France and number one favorite of king Henri III, and by all means governor of Guyenne. That’s how he becomes owner of the property in the beginning of the XVII th century. His power in the region was of that sort that ships which were passing by the domain had to strike the sails as a sign of loyalty, whereas the name of the domain: Baisse voile, which becomes Beychevelle and resulted in the emblem of the domain. The castle has been rebuilt in 1757 by the marquis of Brassier. The family of Brassier, Baron of Beychevelle, has given his first brand letters to the wine of Beychevelle in the cours of the XVIIIth  century. Coming from the dynasty of the family Achille-Fould who from 1890, and over three generations with particularly Aymar Achille-Fould, were at the origin of the prestige of Beychevelle. In 1986, by decease of the latest, the GMF and Suntory rebought the whole of the domain of the Achille-Fould family.

Recently restored in its first classicism, Beychevelle is with no doubt one of the most beautiful castles and park of Bordeaux. The recent owner of the castle is the group groupe Azur-GMF.
The ground and the vineyard
The domain is on garonnaises’s deep soils. The vineyards with an average age of 25 years old are planted in a very strong density of 10 000 roots/ha. The Encépagement (balans of parts of the plantation of the different ‘cépages’is at 62% cabernet-sauvignon, 31% merlot, 5% cabernet-franc, and 2% petit verdot.
The wine
Château Beychevelle is a classical Saint-Julien: the full, the rich aromas, and its strength. The classical harmony of the prestigeous Médoc.
Beychevelle produces a second wine as well, named Admiral of Beychevelle..
