This vintage was the property of a bazadaise family in
16 century. Yquem was brought by marriage to the
Lur-Saluces in 1875.
The Yquem Estate includes
188 hectares including 133 hectares cultivated in vines, 106 normally in production. The exceptionnal quality of the Yquem wines is due to the nature of the soil itself: often resting on clay had to be drained, the splendid exposure of the slopes of the Estate, the strict selection of vine type and the meticulous care which governs the culture, the harvest and the vine making, all compose this excellent wine.
Grape varieties planted on the property is composed of
80% Semillon and 20% Sauvignon.
Only the part of harvest considered to be perfect will be bottled under the mark of Château Yquem and for certain years the entire harvest will be downgraded, such as in
1964, 1972, 1974, 1992.
It is this constant attention and all the care taken to ensure the quality of the wine which allowed Yquem, during the
classification of 1855, to be the first classified vintage among the best, since it is only having the rank of «First Superior Vintage».
Today, it is still the
first of the high-classed wines of the Sauternes, the
first of all the white wines of the world. On average, the production at Yquem is glass of wine per vine and per annum, that is to say an average of approximately 95 000 annual bottles. |
